K-GIM, you did it again!
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (Minister Kang Do-hyung) announced on Tuesday, November 26 that it has achieved 1 trillion won in seaweed exports for the second consecutive year and has broken the all-time record for exports (USD 850 million) as of October. In addition, an event to celebrate the breaking of the seaweed export record was held at Lotte Mart Zetaplex Seoul Station at 3 PM on the same day.

Korea’s seaweed exports, which account for more than 70% of the global seaweed market, have increased more than sevenfold from $110 million in 2010 to $790 million in 2023, and the number of exporting countries has also expanded from 64 in 2010 to 122 in 2023. This year, it is expected to record the highest export performance ever (approximately $1 billion), up about 27% from the previous year, due to solid overseas demand resulting from increased awareness of Korea’s seaweed and support for exporters to enter overseas markets.
This event was held at Lotte Mart Zetaplex Seoul Station, a popular destination for both foreigners and locals (foreign sales account for approximately 35%). A photo zone themed on seaweed was operated for foreign tourists, and various experiences such as seaweed cooking demonstrations and seaweed snacks were provided to promote the Korean seaweed brand. In addition to publicizing the global status of Korean seaweed, the event also promoted policies for stable domestic supply.
Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Kang Do-hyung said, “The government has been pursuing policies in all directions to support our country’s seaweed exports, including production, processing, and export, which makes this event commemorating the great feat of seaweed exports very meaningful.” He added, “We will continue to work hard to increase the added value of K-Gim (GIM) in the global market and solidify its export competitiveness, while also supporting production to stabilize the domestic market.”
