The Ministry of Environment (Minister Kim Wan-seop) announced on August 26 that Samsung C&T Construction Division (hereinafter referred to as Samsung C&T) signed a contract with the Australian company Lion Energy and the Japanese company’s subsidiary DGA Energy Solutions Australia in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. announced that it had signed an agreement to jointly develop green hydrogen.

Under this agreement, a green hydrogen production facility will be built in a port area near Brisbane, Australia, and up to 300 tons of green hydrogen per year will be supplied to the Australian domestic market after completion in 2026.

Samsung C&T will participate as a developer and take the lead in the entire process, including design, equipment procurement, construction, and test operations.

This Australian green hydrogen project in Brisbane is expected to serve as a stepping stone for a large-scale green hydrogen project planned by Samsung C&T. Through this, we plan to build additional large-scale green hydrogen production facilities in Eastern Australia and Western Australia.

Meanwhile, the agreement ceremony was held at the Royal International Convention Center (Royal ICC) in Brisbane, Australia, and the Korean government attended, and the Korean government, Director of the Ministry of Environment’s Global Top Green Industry Promotion Team, Jeong Hwan-jin, congratulated the domestic company’s entry into the Australian green hydrogen business and actively supported the Queensland government. requested.

The Ministry of Environment selected Australia as a key cooperation country for green hydrogen this year, following Oman and Saudi Arabia last year, and carried out various order support activities such as △dispatching a high-level and working-level order support team, △holding a joint forum between the two governments, △feasibility study, and △dispatching a market development team. is in progress.

Australia has excellent renewable energy conditions, so domestic companies are actively entering green industries such as wind and solar power generation and green hydrogen businesses. In addition to Samsung C&T, Korea Zinc is promoting the green industry in earnest by establishing Arc Energy, a subsidiary specializing in renewable energy and green hydrogen, in Australia in 2021.

Korea Zinc plans to build a green energy hub in Townsville, Queensland to produce renewable energy and green hydrogen, and is also collaborating with Acciona Energy, a global renewable energy company in Spain, to create the largest scale in Australia (923MW). )’s MacIntyre wind farm is under construction. This wind power plant is scheduled to begin commercial operation in the second half of 2025.
