Establishment of reserve for additional purchase of COVID-19 treatment, plan to stabilize supply within this month
A reserve fund of KRW 326.8 billion has been set aside for the purchase of additional COVID-19 treatments, and supply is expected to stabilize within this month.
On August 19, 2024, a reserve fund of 326.8 billion won for additional purchases of COVID-19 treatments was approved at the Cabinet meeting. This amount is enough to purchase treatment for about 262,000 people.
As the use of treatments has increased more than 40 times in one month due to the recent summer resurgence of COVID-19, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency and the Ministry of Strategy and Finance have urgently begun the process of securing budget for additional purchases from the end of July.
The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency announced that it plans to stabilize the supply of treatments within this month by supplying sufficient additional quantities to pharmacies across the country by next week.
In addition, the additional 262,000 treatments purchased this time will be stably supplied to high-risk groups until October, and after October, health insurance registration will be promptly worked with the relevant ministries so that the treatments can be supplied within the general medical system. He explained that he would proceed.
