Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, “We will do our best to alleviate public anxiety about electric vehicles”
Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Park Sang-woo visited Hyundai Motor Company’s Seoul Southern High-Tech Center on the afternoon of August 16 and inspected the progress of the ‘Electric Vehicle Special Safety Inspection’.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has recommended that domestic manufacturers and importers quickly conduct special safety inspections for electric vehicles as public anxiety about electric vehicle safety grows and concerns about electric vehicle fires continue following the electric vehicle fire accident that occurred in Incheon on August 1.
Accordingly, Hyundai Motors, Kia, and Mercedes-Benz are conducting special inspections of electric vehicles starting August 13, and other manufacturers are also preparing for special inspections.
In order to strengthen electric vehicle safety management, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has completed the introduction of a battery certification system that certifies battery safety in advance and a full-cycle battery history management system, and plans to implement it in earnest from February next year.
Minister Park emphasized, “As public concerns about the safety of electric vehicles have increased, the industry must thoroughly conduct special inspections so that the public can use electric vehicles with confidence and strive to develop safer electric vehicles.”
In addition, he said, “Even before the implementation of the battery certification system, we plan to thoroughly manage the production, operation, inspection, and free maintenance of electric vehicles, and announce comprehensive measures, including measures to strengthen the safety of electric vehicles, together with the relevant ministries in early September.”
