Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs begins shipping fresh pears following new apples grown in 2024, “Can we expect fruit prices to stabilize?”
Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (hereinafter referred to as the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs) Song Mi-ryeong visited the Naju Pear Horticulture Cooperative Producer Distribution Center (APC) located in Naju-si, Jeollanam-do on July 31 to encourage the selection and shipment of fresh pear, and visited orchards in full bloom to discuss crop conditions and summer disaster prevention. The response situation was checked.
This visit was organized by Minister Song Mi-ryeong, who is paying special attention to stabilizing the supply and demand of pear items whose prices are high due to a decrease in storage, to encourage farmers and officials producing and shipping new pears produced in 2024.
Minister Song Mi-ryeong, who visited the Naju Horticultural Agricultural Cooperative Agricultural Produce Distribution Center (APC), watched the process of sorting, packaging and shipping fresh pears and said, “This year’s crop is good, so production is expected to increase by about 20% compared to the previous year. “Once the reported varieties are shipped in earnest from mid-August, market supply will be sufficient and prices are expected to stabilize,” he said. “Pears, along with apples, are representative fruits consumed year-round among Korean fruits, but prices have so far dropped due to a decrease in production last year.” It was high. “As raw sulfur has begun to be shipped, we ask you to pay special attention on site to ensure steady shipment from production storage and distribution facilities.”
Lee Dong-hee, head of the Naju Pear Horticultural Cooperative, who attended the day, said, “Currently, the number of pears is growing well and fruit growth is progressing smoothly, so it is expected to be produced in large quantities compared to the previous year and the average year, so when full-scale shipments begin from August onwards, prices will also stabilize significantly. “It is expected that this will happen,” explained Noh Ho-young, head of the horticultural observation department at the Agricultural Observation Center of the Korea Rural Economic Institute. “It is expected to expand significantly.”
Before visiting the Agricultural Produce Distribution Center (APC) on this day, Minister Song Mi-ryeong visited pear farmers to check the status of preparations for summer disasters such as heavy rain during the rainy season and the growth situation, and to inform the relevant farmers and officials from the attending local governments, agricultural cooperatives, Rural Development Administration, etc. about the harvest time. Thorough growth management was also requested to prevent damage from heat waves, typhoons, pests, etc. during the remaining period.
As the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs is expected to produce more than the average level of major fruits, including apples and pears, and to stabilize prices, it operates a growth management council until the harvest season, maintains an emergency response system in preparation for summer disasters, and provides technical guidance to farmers through the field technical support group. We plan to make every effort to respond, including strengthening.
