Ministry of Food and Drug Safety prepares comprehensive support measures for global growth of K-food
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (Minister Oh Yoo-kyung) announced on October 24 that it will issue an administrative notice on the draft “Safety Support Procedures and Methods for Exported Food, etc.” (MFDS Regulations) containing the import permit request procedures, export business registration, and technical support to support the domestic food industry’s overseas exports, and will collect opinions until November 13.
Based on the experience and know-how gained through various export support projects, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety has systematically organized all processes of export food safety regulation support for the first time in the government through this regulation. Through this, it aims to actively resolve difficulties faced by companies during the export preparation process.
Recent major export achievements (refer to press release) ① (‘23.12. 27) “Exports of heat-treated poultry products such as samgyetang and dumplings are now open to the 27 EU countries!” ② (‘24.7. 16) “Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, swift resolution of the Danish Veterinary Food Authority’s recall of Korean spicy ramen” ③ (‘24.7. 18) “Korean chicken, seafood, and honey products maintain EU export eligibility” ④ (‘24.8. 13) “K-chicken products open to UK market following EU!”
The main contents of the regulations are ▲Procedures for requesting import permission for exported food products to the export partner country ▲Support for on-site inspections by the government of the export partner country ▲Registration of export businesses and technical support ▲Provision of information on food safety regulations of the export partner country, etc.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety plans to collect opinions from the industry and request permission to import items desired for export to the target country so that various K-foods can be exported to more countries. It also supports explanation of domestic food safety systems and on-site participation during on-site inspections by the government of the target country.
In addition, we will request registration of export businesses in export partner countries and support the entire process until completion, and establish a customized technical support plan for export businesses every year to promote practical export support.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety will continuously provide information on food safety regulations in exporting countries to business operators and related organizations, and will also provide export training courses for business operators. In addition, in order to resolve export difficulties in the industry, the Ministry will operate an ‘Export Support Council’ with the participation of related organizations, experts, and exporters to support business operators.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety plans to continue to cooperate with relevant organizations and industries to promote domestic regulatory innovation and various forms of regulatory diplomacy, thereby raising the global status of excellent K-food and creating visible export results.
