The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (Minister Kang Do-hyung) announced that it plans to provide safe navigation information to coastal ships at a distance of more than 100 km through ‘sea navigation’ starting July 23. To this end, we plan to start a pilot service of 『Maritime Traffic Safety Radio』 using the high-speed maritime wireless communication network LTE-M.

Through this service, it is possible to provide safe navigation information about disasters or worsening weather conditions to ships within 100km of the coast, similar to land radio. In addition, it is expected to prevent maritime accidents and strengthen the medical welfare of seafarers by providing seasonal safety rules, fishing boat operation safety regulations, and seafarer health management information.

Anyone can use the marine traffic safety radio service by installing the Bada Navi app on their smartphone, and ships with Bada Navi terminals can listen to the service through the terminal starting in September. There will be a test operation period until October, and the service will be provided twice a week, every Tuesday and Thursday. The official service will begin in November and you can use the service every day. If you miss a live broadcast, you can listen to it repeatedly through the re-listening function.

Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Kang Do-hyung said in a commemorative speech recorded at the Korea Maritime Transportation Safety Authority studio on the 12th, “I hope that useful and diverse information can be provided to workers working in distant seas in information blind spots.” In addition, Minister Kang directly participated in the production of a summer safety campaign broadcast through radio services, emphasizing compliance with basic safety rules such as wearing life jackets to prevent casualties at sea.
