Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs’ ‘Thousand Won Breakfast’ with 200 universities!

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (Minister Song Mei-ryeong, hereinafter referred to as the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs) selected 200 universities to participate in the ‘Thousand Won Breakfast’ program to provide quality breakfast to university students and promote rice consumption among young people.
‘Breakfast for a Thousand Won’ is a project in which the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs provides 2,000 won per student, and local governments and schools cover the remainder, allowing students to enjoy breakfast for 1,000 won.
This year, the ‘Thousand Won Breakfast’ project is being participated by 200 universities nationwide, including the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and 79 schools in the metropolitan area (Seoul Metropolitan University, Kyunghee University, etc.) and 34 schools in the Chungcheong area (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Chungbuk National University, etc.). This year, the project was launched early to provide a warm breakfast even during the winter break (January to February) , and 10 schools including Seoul National University and Chungnam National University ** have been providing breakfast to students since January.

Last year, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs worked to improve the quality of the diet by raising the government support unit price (from 1,000 won per person to 2,000 won), introducing an ombudsman, and promoting excellent diets. As a result, university interest in participating in the project has increased, and students’ awareness has improved, leading to results.

Choi Myeong-cheol, the food policy officer at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, said, “This year, unlike previous years, we are pushing forward with the project earlier so that students can receive the ‘Thousand Won Breakfast’ benefit even during vacation periods.” He added, “We will continue to actively reflect the opinions of students and universities and conduct joint inspections with consumer groups to ensure that more students can receive quality meals.”
