Average daily traffic fatalities during Chuseok holiday period decreased by 39.1%
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (Minister Park Sang-woo) announced that during the special traffic control period for the Chuseok holiday (September 13-18), the average number of traffic accidents per day nationwide was 228.8, a 49.4% decrease from the previous year (452.4 cases). In addition, the average number of deaths per day was 4.2, a 39.1% decrease from the previous year (6.9 cases).
‘As of 24:00 on Wednesday, September 18, 24, this is a provisional figure, and may change depending on the traffic accident statistics of the National Police Agency in the future.
The total number of people moving during the countermeasure period was 35.03 million, a 14.1% decrease from the 40.77 million people moving during last year’s holiday, which was one day longer than this year, but the average number of people moving per day remained similar (5.82 million → 5.84 million).
The total number of vehicles on highways was 33.32 million, down 14% from 38.78 million the previous year, while the average daily number of vehicles was 5.55 million, maintaining the previous year’s level (5.54 million).
This year, due to the Chuseok holiday period being long and short, the maximum time taken to return home on highways decreased, while the maximum time taken to return home increased.

By mode of transportation, most people used passenger cars (share 87.7%), and the air share slightly increased (2.7%→3.0%). In particular, as demand for overseas travel increased, the number of people going abroad increased by 5.2% year-on-year (780,000 → 821,000) despite the holiday being one day shorter.
