The National Institute for Unification Education announced that it published two types of basic unification education textbooks, “Understanding Unification Issues in 2024” and “Understanding North Korea in 2024,” on July 4.

It was said that this book was compiled by widely listening to and accepting the opinions of various unification education institutions, organizations, and experts in each field.

The 2024 basic unification education textbook sets the main directions of unification education as presenting a vision for unification based on the constitutional values of freedom, human rights, and democracy and understanding North Korea correctly and objectively.

『Understanding Unification Issues 2024』 reflects changes in the situation of inter-Korean relations, such as recent trends in world order, diagnosis of the Indo-Pacific situation, and North Korea’s insistence on the so-called two-state theory, and responds to such complex changes in the environment for unification of the Korean Peninsula, while demonstrating that the vision of liberal democracy is the key to unification. The focus was on suggesting that there should be a firm direction.

This book also contains the government’s efforts to create an environment for liberal democratic unification through cooperation with the international community, support the successful settlement of North Korean defectors, and resolve humanitarian issues such as North Korean human rights, South Korean military prisoners, abductees, and detainees.

『Understanding North Korea 2024』 deals in detail with the oppressive and totalitarian characteristics of the North Korean regime, including North Korea’s monolithic ruling system, hereditary succession of power, and human rights violations experienced by residents in their daily lives, as well as the recent strengthening of North Korea’s nuclear and missile capabilities and nuclear force strategy against South Korea. Changes reflect the reality that security threats on the Korean Peninsula are amplifying.

The 2024 basic textbooks for unification education will be distributed to schools at all levels, offices of education, and various education and training institutions, and will be supported so that they can be used as lecture materials or research materials in various unification education sites.

This textbook has been produced as an electronic file and an e-book for the visually impaired, and anyone can download and view it from the resource section of the National Unification Education Center website (uniedu.go.kr).
