Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism holds ‘Forum for Revitalization of School Sports’ to seek ways to revitalize school sports
On July 2, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Yoo In-chon and Second Vice Minister Jang Mi-ran held a ‘Forum for Revitalizing School Sports’ to hear various opinions from the field.
In this forum, experts in the school sports field, including the school sports department, will attend and freely share opinions on analyzing the crisis facing the school sports department, seeking improvement measures, activating the school sports club, and linking with the sports department.
As a result of a recent analysis of the Korean Sports Council’s athlete registration system, the proportion of athletes belonging to school sports teams is gradually decreasing, and the proportion of athletes registered outside of schools, such as public sports clubs and private organizations, is increasing. In the long term, it is expected that the supply of student athletes will become difficult as the school-age population decreases due to the low birth rate. Accordingly, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism held a discussion meeting to prepare preemptive and effective responses to such environmental changes.
There is a need to establish a cooperation system between related organizations to strengthen the connection between recreational sports and professional sports.
“School physical education is the foundation of professional physical education and the core of lifelong physical education. “The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism plans to strengthen the discovery and development of excellent student athletes and expand by integrating recreational sports and professional sports,” he said. “To this end, we plan to promote the revitalization of school sports by establishing an organic cooperation system between related organizations, especially the Ministry of Education. “In order to strengthen consultations with the government, we will take the lead in continuously discovering policies by holding policy consultations at the vice-ministerial level on a regular basis.”
Second Vice Minister Jang Mi-ran said, “With the recent decision to separate integrated physical activity classes for first and second graders of elementary school, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Ministry of Education are preparing to hold a vice-minister-level policy consultative body.” He added, “To improve the quality of regular physical education classes in the future.” We plan to expand the deployment of physical education instructors and strengthen physical education training for teachers. In addition, we plan to discuss various issues by improving systems such as the minimum academic qualification system related to student athletes and strengthening cooperation between school sports clubs and school athletic departments.”
