Korea-Japan Leaders Hold First Phone Call… President Lee: “Let Us Face Future Challenges Together and Seek Mutual Prosperity”
President Lee Jae-myung held his first phone conversation with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on the 9th, beginning at 12:00 PM and lasting approximately 25 minutes, according to Presidential Spokesperson Kang Yoo-jung.
In a briefing, Kang stated, President Lee expressed his appreciation for Prime Minister Ishiba’s congratulations on his inauguration and emphasized the growing importance of Korea-Japan relations in today’s strategic environment. He expressed hope that the two countries would work together to address future challenges and seek mutual prosperity from the perspective of shared national interests.”

Kang added that the two leaders agreed on the need to build a stronger and more mature bilateral relationship based on mutual respect, trust, and a responsible attitude.
“In particular, as this year marks the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan, both leaders took note of the vibrant exchanges between the people of the two nations and agreed to further strengthen communication between the two governments,” she said.
The leaders also reviewed the progress made through trilateral cooperation between Korea, the U.S., and Japan, and agreed to further enhance efforts to jointly respond to various geopolitical challenges within that framework.
Finally, Kang reported that the two leaders agreed to meet in person in the near future to engage in deeper discussions on the development of Korea-Japan relations and other mutual interests.
