This policy dialogue was held in connection with Minister Oh Young-joo’s visit to Japan from May 9 to May 11, when the Ministry of SMEs and Startups proposed to the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to hold a director-level policy dialogue on small and medium-sized businesses and startups.

The Ministry of SMEs and Startups has been promoting policy dialogue as it has judged that it is necessary to establish communication and cooperation channels between the two governments as small and medium-sized and venture companies have recently expanded into Japan.

Through prior coordination of opinions, the two sides discussed the current policy dialogue focusing on the current status of the ecosystem of start-ups in the two countries and measures for inter-governmental cooperation. In particular, discussions focused on the government’s role and support policies for attracting overseas start-ups (startups) to the country, and our side requested the Japanese government’s interest and cooperation in relation to the advancement of active Korean start-ups (startups) into Japan. did.

The two sides evaluated the usefulness of this policy dialogue, which was held for the first time, and agreed to hold a policy dialogue in Korea in the near future.

Meanwhile, Japan is making nurturing start-ups a key policy principle by announcing a five-year plan for start-ups in 2022, and recently, Korean start-ups are entering the Japanese market actively, leading to increased cooperation between the two countries. Through policy exchange between governments, various synergies are expected to be created, such as securing the global competitiveness of Korean and Japanese startups.

Choi Won-young, Global Growth Policy Director, emphasized, “Through this policy dialogue, we have opened a new direct cooperation channel with the Japanese government, and we will make policy efforts to regularly check the difficulties of Korean companies operating in Japan and respond preemptively.”
