Active operation of the Gumi National Forest Management Office’s Agricultural By-product Crushing Support Team

□ The Southern Regional Forest Service Gumi National Forest Management Office (Director Yoon Su-il) announced that it will continue to operate the project to support the destruction of agricultural by-products of farmers in forest-adjacent areas to prevent forest fires caused by burning during the spring forest fire caution period of 2025 (January 24, 2025 – May 15, 2025), following last year.

○ The Gumi National Forest Management Office’s on-site agricultural by-product crushing support team, which began operating in January of this year, has crushed agricultural by-products (fruit branches, etc.) of over 2.3 ha in collaboration with agricultural technology centers in the area.
※ Gumi National Forest Management Office jurisdiction area (9 cities and counties): Daegu Metropolitan City, Sangju City, Gimcheon City, Gumi City, Gyeongsan City, Chilgok County, Seongju County, Goryeong County, Cheongdo County

○ The biggest advantage of the shredding support project is that it prevents farmers from burning agricultural by-products. In addition, the shredded by-products can be used as compost, making it more environmentally friendly than incineration.

○ Applications for the shredding support project can be submitted through the city/county agricultural technology center or directly to the Gumi National Forest Management Office. The Gumi National Forest Management Office plans to actively operate the agricultural by-product shredding support project until the large-scale forest fire caution period.

□ Yoon Su-il, the director of the Gumi National Forest Management Office, said, “We will actively operate collection and shredding projects within the jurisdiction to prevent the burning of agricultural by-products, which is the main cause of forest fires, before the large-scale forest fire caution period in spring.”
