The metaverse Virtual Gangwon released on Jan. 2 allows users to experience the Gangwon Winter Youth Olympics (Gangwon 2024) in virtual reality.

As the first pilot platform of a metaverse for an Olympics, Virtual Gangwon was developed by Gangwon-do Province, the host of this year’s event and whose official government name is Gangwon State, with support from the Ministry of Science and ICT, International Olympic Committee and Gangwon 2024’s organizing committee.

Virtual Gangwon is available on the website (https://xrgw.kr/metaverse) and its app can be downloaded on Android smartphones in six languages: English, Chinese, Japanese, French, Spanish and Korean.

Users can go on virtual tours of the competition’s venues and athlete’s village, take part in games and challenges, and communicate with sports fans around the world.

They can also explore tourist attractions in the four host sites of the tournament in Gangwon-do: Gangneung and the counties of Pyeongchang-gun, Jeongseon-gun and Hoengseong-gun.

To begin on Jan. 19 and run through Feb. 1, Gangwon 2024 will see youth athletes from around the world compete in 15 events such as figure skating, short track, ski jumping and the biathlon.

Admission to the games is free but tickets must be obtained via reservation on the website of the event’s organizing committee.
