“New forest varieties with diverse charms, expected for industrialization”
The National Institute of Forest Science (Director Lee Gyu-myeong) announced that it will publish and distribute the ‘2024 Forest New Varieties Commentary’ containing a total of 407 varieties, including 73 new forest varieties registered in 2024.
Newly registered varieties this year include the yellow-fruited Omija ‘Geumbitsaeul’, the patterned pine tree ‘Seojushinbaek’, the pear ‘Sanhyang’, which is mainly used as a medicine or raw material for herbal liquor, and the fragrant flower-scented Misennamu ‘Kkoribyeol’, a Korean endemic plant. These new varieties suggest new possibilities for the forestry industry and are expected to be widely utilized in the market.
The National Institute of Forest Science publishes and distributes the ‘New Forest Varieties Commentary’ every year, which includes photos and key characteristics of new forest varieties, in order to raise awareness of variety protection and promote new varieties. Through this, the institute supports the industrialization of new varieties and sales and promotion by breeders.
The published booklet will be posted on the Korea Forest Service website and the center’s data room so that anyone can download it*, and it will be distributed as a booklet to national and local research institutes, forestry organizations, and individual breeders interested in developing new varieties.
