Korea’s advancement to the quarterfinals of the 2023 Asian Cup was decided after a penalty shootout against Saudi Arabia.

The Korean national football team, led by coach Jürgen Klinsmann, played against Middle East powerhouse Saudi Arabia for a total of 120 minutes until overtime in the 2023 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Qatar Asian Cup round of 16 held at the Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar on the 31st (Korean time). As the score was tied at -1, Cho Hyeon-woo (Ulsan) made a good save in the penalty shootout, winning 4-2 and advancing to the quarterfinals.

Previously, the national team achieved 1 win and 2 draws in the group stage, ranked 2nd in the group, and advanced to the round of 16, receiving criticism from public opinion.

Accordingly, Korea will compete with Australia, who defeated Indonesia 4-0 in the game held on the 28th, to advance to the semifinals at Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah at 0:30 on the 3rd of next month (Korean time).

Meanwhile, with this victory, Korea achieved the feat of advancing to the quarterfinals of the Asian Cup for the eighth time in a row since the 1996 Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Korea won the first tournament in 1956 and the second tournament in 1960, but has never won since and is attempting to regain the top spot in the Asian Cup for the first time in 64 years.
