As President Yoon Seok-yeol suddenly declared martial law on the night of the 3rd and lifted it early in the morning on the 4th, the year-end political situation is falling into unpredictable chaos. The martial law ended in about 6 hours, but its aftermath caused a huge ripple effect in the political world, leading to the impeachment situation for the first time in 8 years.

The day after martial law was declared, the opposition party immediately proposed an impeachment bill against President Yoon and is doing everything it can to force the government to step down. The People Power Party is struggling to come up with countermeasures amid signs of recurring internal factional conflict.

Currently, the impeachment bill’s passage depends on the number of defectors within the People Power Party, and the vote is expected to take place between the 6th and 7th. The fate of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration is likely to be decided during this period.

The impeachment motion proposed by the opposition party must be voted on within 24 hours after being reported to the plenary session, but no later than 72 hours. The opposition party is moving quickly, planning to report it to the plenary session on the 5th and vote on the 6th or 7th.

The Democratic Party of Korea and its leader Lee Jae-myung, who had avoided directly mentioning the impeachment of the president, also strongly demanded the resignation of the government this time. At the ‘Emergency National Assembly to Urge President Yoon Seok-yeol to Resign and Promote Impeachment’ held at the National Assembly, Lee emphasized, “President Yoon appears to be in a state where he cannot make normal and rational decisions,” and “We can no longer tolerate it, nor can we forgive it.”
