‘Rose Election’ Again… June 3rd is a Strong Possible Date

As the Constitutional Court ruled on the 4th to impeach former President Yoon Seok-yeol, the possibility of an early presidential election being held in June has increased.
The 19th presidential election, which took place after the impeachment of former President Park Geun-hye in 2017, was also held on May 9 and was nicknamed the “Rose Election.” This time, too, a new president will be elected during the season when roses bloom.
According to Article 68, Paragraph 2 of the current Constitution, if the President becomes vacant or loses his/her qualifications, a successor must be elected within 60 days. The Public Official Election Act also stipulates that an election due to a vacancy in the Presidential office must be held within 60 days from the date on which the reason for the vacancy is confirmed.
The schedule for the presidential election is determined by the acting president. The election date must be announced within 10 days from the date of the Constitutional Court’s decision to impeach the president, and the election date must be confirmed at least 50 days before the election date.
Following these legal procedures, the presidential election date is likely to be June 3rd.
