This year, the theme was selected as ‘Closing the Early Warning Gap Together ‘ so that people around the world can be protected from meteorological disasters through early warning systems . Through this, the importance of early warning in the era of climate crisis is emphasized , while also informing that national efforts and international cooperation are necessary to reduce gaps between countries, regions, and generations .
The Korea Meteorological Administration also set the theme of this year’s ceremony as ‘ Everyone’s daily life safe from meteorological disasters , with early warning.’ Minister of Environment Kim Wan-seop and Chairman of the National Assembly Environment and Labor Committee Ahn Ho-young delivered congratulatory remarks via video at this ceremony , and around 300 people including Daejeon Metropolitan City Deputy Mayor Yoo Deuk-won, Korea Meteorological Society President Park Seon-gi, and external figures and Korea Meteorological Administration staff attended.
At the ceremony, government awards were presented to those who have contributed to the development of meteorological services. Professor Park Seon-gi of Ewha Womans University received the Red Stripes Order of Civil Merit for her contributions to spreading data assimilation technology to the international community and greatly contributing to improving the accuracy of numerical forecasting with parameter optimization technology using artificial intelligence (AI) techniques . Professor Lee Gyu-won of Kyungpook National University received the Order of Civil Merit for his contributions to the localization of meteorological observation equipment such as vertical side fans and weather radar signal processors , and Professor Shin Dong-hoon of Chonnam National University received the Order of Civil Merit for his contributions to the development of earthquake analysis and earthquake early warning technology using artificial intelligence .
Meanwhile, as a side event, the ‘Meteorological Science Exhibition and Experience Event with the People ‘ will be held at the Daejeon Expo Citizen’s Square . There are a variety of experiential programs that adults and children can enjoy together, such as the Meteorological Disaster Safety Experience * , Earthquake Experience , Korean Numerical Forecast Model Experience , and Weather Drone and Observation Vehicle Experience, where you can directly experience the theme of World Meteorological Day 2025.
* Experience weather disaster safety: ① Meteorological Agency heavy rain emergency disaster text message (CBS), ② My own survival backpack, ③ Typhoon experience, ④ Weather disaster OX quiz in that order
The side event, where you can see the winning works of the 42nd Weather and Climate Photo and Video Contest and the Sweet Climate Contest as well as various experiential activities , will run for four days from Thursday, March 20 to Sunday , March 23.
